Aclara Star® Zonescan Leak Alarm System The STAR®
ZoneScan system combines the strengths of leak-detection technology from Gutermann International and two-way fixed network AMI technology from Aclara, yielding a more powerful, efficient method of detecting water main leaks. Deployed at regular intervals throughout the water pipeline network (attached to valves via the integrated magnetic base), Gutermann leak- intelligence units monitor and analyze noise characteristics within the pipe network and can detect and identify the presence and location of a leak. Previously, this data has been retrieved manually or using drive-by technology. The STAR ZoneScan system automates the collection, retrieval, and analysis of acoustic data by taking advantage of the latest features of Aclara’s STAR Network AMI system, including:
Two-way communication between the utility head-end and endpoints
Time-synchronized initiation of sound recordings, and
An interface to Gutermann’s web-based data correlation software
The result is a system that provides critical water distribution system knowledge with only minimal operator involvement. Once the units are deployed, operators can select study parameters and analyze results at the utility office. No manual or drive-by data collection is required. The addition of STAR ZoneScan leak detection to a STAR Network AMI system gives customers a powerful tool to quantify and reduce system water losses. The STAR Network AMI system allows utilities to compare total water consumption to water production to get a gross estimate of system water loss. STAR ZoneScan units can then be deployed in targeted areas of the pipeline network to identify the presence and specific location of leaks. Repair crews can be dispatched with confidence to leak locations that have been identified.
Pinpoint accuracy: Identify precise leak locations with correlated, time-synchronized sound recordings.
Hands-off operation: Perform automated data collection with minimal attention by operators.
Added value: Add leak detection easily to two-way STAR Network AMI systems.
Installation flexibility: Implement permanent or “lift and shift” deployment.
Conservation: Enhance efforts by containing leaks and water loss.
Built for extreme conditions: Environmentally sealed MTU prevents damage caused by water or snow.
Material compatibility: Works on pipes made of a range of materials including metal, concrete and non-metallic types.
